Google is changing which Gemini models personal-account users can choose. For people using Gemini without a Google AI subscription, the change starts taking effect on October 9, 2026: the model picker will be limited to Flash-Lite. Google AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash, while Google AI Pro and AI Ultra keep Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. Google says AI Plus subscribers will receive an email telling them when the change applies to their account.
The change is about model availability, not whether Gemini itself becomes paid-only. Flash-Lite remains available without an AI plan. It is also separate from Google's compute-based usage limits, which determine how much of the available models and features you can use.
Gemini model access after the October change
| Personal-account plan | Flash-Lite | Flash | Pro | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No Google AI plan | Yes | No | No | Starts October 9, 2026 |
| Google AI Plus | Yes | Yes | No | Account-specific; Google says to watch for an email |
| Google AI Pro | Yes | Yes | Yes | Retains access |
| Google AI Ultra | Yes | Yes | Yes | Retains access |
This plan-by-plan table comes from Google's Gemini model-access change notice. The notice applies to Gemini Apps used with a personal Google Account. Work and school accounts have separate availability rules.
What changes for free Gemini users
The biggest change is for users without a Google AI plan. Google's general limits page has listed Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro as available across the personal-account tiers before this rollout, with different usage limits. The October change notice narrows the free tier to Flash-Lite once the new access rules take effect.
That means a free user who currently sees Flash or Pro in the model picker should not assume those options will remain available after the rollout reaches the account. Flash-Lite is Google's lighter, speed-focused model and remains the no-plan option.
If your normal Gemini workflow depends specifically on Flash or Pro, check the model picker again after October 9 before starting work that assumes those models are available.
What AI Plus users keep - and what they lose
Google AI Plus continues to include Flash-Lite and Flash, but Pro is not listed for the plan after the change. The timing is different from the free-tier rollout: Google says AI Plus subscribers should receive an email explaining when the new model access applies to their account.
So October 9 should not be treated as a guaranteed switch date for every AI Plus subscriber. The safest signal is the account-specific email and the models actually shown in Gemini's picker.
What happens to AI Pro and AI Ultra
Google AI Pro and AI Ultra remain the tiers with access to all three listed models: Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. For users who need Pro for more demanding coding, maths, long-file or reasoning work, these are the personal-account tiers that continue to list Pro access after the change.
Google describes Flash-Lite as the efficient model for everyday tasks, Flash as the stronger general-purpose option, and Pro as the most advanced option for more complex work. Model names and availability can still change as Google updates Gemini.
Model access is not the same as your usage limit
There are two separate questions: which models your plan can access and how much Gemini usage your plan gets. Google's current Gemini limits and upgrades page lists compute-based usage tiers rather than a simple fixed number of prompts.
- No AI plan: standard limits.
- AI Plus: 2x standard limits.
- AI Pro: 4x standard limits.
- AI Ultra: 5x or 20x AI Pro limits, depending on the subscription.
Google says usage depends on factors such as prompt complexity, the model and feature being used, and the length of the conversation. Limits may also change with capacity and product updates. Having access to a model does not mean unlimited use of that model.
Context windows also differ by plan
Google's current limits page lists different context windows for personal accounts: 32K tokens without an AI plan, 128K on AI Plus, and 1 million tokens on AI Pro and AI Ultra. This matters when you upload large files or have long conversations, because the context window affects how much information Gemini can consider together.
How to check what your account actually has
Google's plan-management help explains how to switch models. On Gemini web, sign in, open Gemini and select the model name inside the prompt box. The options shown there are the clearest account-level indication of what you can use at that moment.
- Confirm you are signed into the correct personal Google Account.
- Check whether your account shows no plan, AI Plus, AI Pro or AI Ultra.
- Open the model picker and note which models are actually available.
- If you are on AI Plus, check the email address tied to the subscription for Google's rollout notice.
- If a model disappears, first confirm that it is an access change rather than simply hitting a temporary usage limit.
What this change does not establish
The notice does not mean Gemini is becoming completely paid. Free personal accounts continue to have Flash-Lite. It also does not establish the same model rules for Google Workspace work or school accounts, which are governed separately. Google also warns that model access and limits can vary with testing, availability and capacity.
Bottom line: starting October 9, the free personal-account tier is scheduled to move to Flash-Lite only. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash on an account-specific rollout schedule, while AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three listed models. If your workflow depends on Flash or Pro, check the model picker and your plan before the change reaches your account.
